2010 in retrospect

Standard

Lifted from my fabulous friend, Nafisa, 25 points of contemplation on the year that was:

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?
I watched soccer at a stadium, US vs Algeria. The gees was amazing and contagious. Sure I was sick going there and got ridiculously ill afterwards, but it was totally worth it. I also attended a short course at Vega, Writing skills for copywriters, something I’ve been wanting to do for a few years now, and I was very good at it – even if I say so myself.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
A few years ago I resolved that I will accept help when it is offered, and to ask for it when I need it. I don’t always stick to it, and I will carry this forward in the next year. I will not be making any more.

3. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve?
I’ll be housesitting for a friend, and plan to have a tiny pool party with some other friends.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Almost, but fortunately not.

5. What countries did you visit?
None. I did relocate to Jo’burg though.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Money. Loads of it. Less stress, etc.

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Not only did the Soccer World Cup start on 11 June 2010, it was also the day my nephew had a cornea transplant.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Achieving highest marks in my class at Vega. It proved (to myself) that I can do copywriting, and pretty much anything creative, as long as I just get down and do it.

9. What was your biggest failure?
There are so many; I’d rather not dwell on that now.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Just got over gastritis/pharyngitis. And I’ve a recurring ulcer that refuses to go away.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
The groceries I got for my mom end of November.

12. Where did most of your money go?
The bottomless pit that is my debt.

13. What song will always remind you of 2010?
Waka Waka.

14. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Write and work on my secret project.

15. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Sitting in my room in Jo’burg feeling sorry for myself.

16. What was your favourite TV program?
Grey’s Anatomy.

17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Hate is a very strong word, but the father person has definitely dropped off the list of people I like.

18. What was the best book you read?
Her fearful symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger. She really has a way of writing to invoke really strong emotion with the reader.

19. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I managed to track down the song that I listened to repeatedly 15 years ago on the morning my grandfather died. I’ve made my peace with it. Allegro from Beethoven’s Sonata No4.

20. What was your favourite film of this year?
Despicable Me.

21. What did you do on your birthday?
Had a braai at my mom’s before I had a fight with her about my shrink.

22. What kept you sane?
My friends, prescription drugs, Twitter.

23. Who did you miss?
My grandfather, as always.

24. Who was the best new person you met?
Caryl, who generously offered me the use of her spare bedroom to live in.

25. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
You can do it – regardless of what “it” is.

Project fundraising

Standard

I am foolishly attempting to buy my mom’s house again – this time at market value (in order to get dad to sign the papers). Time is running out. The deal has to be finalised by the end of January, and in order to make any financial institution even consider approving my application, I need to raise a substantial amount of money.

So…

WELCOME TO MY VIRTUAL KISSING BOOTH

For a donation you will receive a virtual kiss (or a hug if you prefer).

If this will work, I don’t know, but I’m sending it out to the universe, and hoping the universe will send me something back. Should anyone feel generous, please send me an email – marthatjie [at] gmail [dot] com

Happy Holidays. Travel safe, stay safe. See you soon!

Last tarot reading for 2010

Standard
I’ve decided that from next year I’ll be posting a single reading a month, as close to the start of the month as I can. And since the new month starts next Saturday, it would be rather silly to have two readings two days apart. So this is how the cards say I’ll be ending the year. Head over to Lotus Tarot to get your own reading.
The High Priestess

Card 1 (The High Priestess) : How you feel about yourself now  »

You are very aware of the feminine power within, intuitive and conscious at a spiritual level, looking for guidance and answers, a secret to be revealed. You desire a wise guide to help address your questions, and your intuition is just that. If you are male the appearance of The High Priestess can represent a woman who you care for very much and who truly inspires you.

The Lovers
Card 2 (The Lovers) : What you most want at this moment  »

The cards suggest that what you most want at this time is to know what choice to make – carry on as you are or take a risk? The risk offers excitement and change and staying as you are …. Well you know what that has to offer. Dare to love, dare to live?

The Fool

Card 3 (The Fool) : Your fears  »

You are afraid of making the wrong decisions. There is a warning here that fool-hardy, impetuous actions could lead to major problems. Perhaps you feel that you don’t have control over a situation, either personal or professional. You may feel unable to complete a task or stay in a current relationship and fear the consequences of your decisions. Perhaps you know deep down that what you want isn’t really such a good thing.

The Devil

Card 4 (The Devil) : What is going for you  »

There’s a possibility of permanence here. If you’re considering a commitment in a relationship or marriage this is a good sign. However question your motives because here we have temptation and addiction, and a desire to be controlled or controlling. So use your intuition and if you recognise what you feel as sincere, great, if not you still have a chance to change direction. If considering giving up a bad habit, such as smoking or drinking for example, now is a good time to start.

The Star

Card 5 (The Star) : What is going against you  »

This is a period of tension and frustrations, you feel pessimistic and fearful that your hopes will be dashed. Any bad luck you may be having is primarily down to your self-doubt and negativity. Have faith that your luck will change.

The Emperor

Card 6 (The Emperor) : Outcome  »

Expect success and achievement of your goals, this is a time for fulfillment of your ambitions. If you have placed your trust in your father, husband/partner or a man of significance in your life, they will come up trumps for you. If you have been the victim of ill-will don’t worry, you will win in the end.

Tarot Wednesday

Standard

Because tomorrow is a public holiday and more importantly because I am bored out of my little mind, I will post this week’s tarot reading a day early.

This week I’m doing the universal six card spread again.
The Fool

Card 1 (The Fool) : How you feel about yourself now  »

You feel discontent or uneasy and feel a need for a change in your life, a new direction, perhaps even an adventure. You might not know where you want to go, just that you don’t want to stay where you are. It’s a time for optimism and major decisions – unexpected influences could have a powerful effect on your decision making. Ask yourself, is what you desire really the right thing for you?

The Magician

Card 2 (The Magician) : What you most want at this moment  »

What you most want is a new love in your life, and when The Magician appears, a new love affair or perhaps a rekindled affair is at hand. All things new are possible, the result is up to you – its all dependent on just how much you want it.

The Lovers

Card 3 (The Lovers) : Your fears  »

Ones heart is ruling ones head! You are so afraid of being hurt you are paralysed into non-action. To have or not to have? To stay or to go? Throw caution to the wind, great happiness awaits you if you can trust what you feel and ignore the fear and do it anyway.

The Star

Card 4 (The Star) : What is going for you  »

A wish come true, this is a time of good luck and fortune, perhaps after a period of struggle and heartache. Good health, possibly after a time of illness, and good fortune that will give you a new zest of life. If considering a new love affair, new job or career, or travel, then go for it. You may also receive a gift or gifts!

The World

Card 5 (The World) : What is going against you  »

As always, fear holds us back and so often leads to missed opportunities. Do not give up or change direction this late in the game just because you have experienced delays – stick with it, have faith and trust the universe, and you will reach the successful conclusion you are wanting.

The Hermit

Card 6 (The Hermit) : Outcome  »

This is a time for you to be alone or may herald a time of loneliness. Take this time for quiet introspection and rest. Don’t worry you will find the answers, but the Hermit signals a warning not to make hasty decisions. If you have been unwell this is a time for rest and recuperation.

Thoughts on 32

Standard

By far and without a doubt, Saturday was the worst.birthday.ever.

Morné made me fabulous fried breakfast. I continued to laze on the couch before we went to Brooklyn Mall where I got a new BlackBerry Curve 8520. That allowed me to give my old phone to Morné, whose BlackBerry Storm died a graceless death last week. I hoped to get some nice cardboard to print a few businesscards on, but a quick stop at the bank made it clear that I will not be buying anything at all, anytime soon. So off we went to my mom’s for a braai.

The afternoon was pleasant enough despite the intense heat. As the afternoon cooled down and some rain finally provided a little relief, we got ready to leave, but my brother called to say they were on their way and we should wait a little longer. They arrive and his fiance gave me a tube of bath/shower gel. And then things went a little downhill. My mom & I had an argument. It ended with me screaming at her and telling Morné we’re leaving.

When we got back to his flat, Morné ran me a bath, afterwhich I climbed in bed. And that was that. The consequent depression has still not lifted. The constant rain is not helping. And it seems I might be coming down with a little something. My throat is all scratchy and I’ve been coughing a bit.

I really hope this is not the tone for the rest of the year. I really don’t care for any of this.

Thursday tarot with a twist

Standard

So instead of doing the usual universal six card spread, I decided today I’ll post my Tarotrhythm. You can find that under free readings on the Lotus Tarot website as well.

Despite attending an awesome function last night and getting home quite late (especially for someone who’s usually in bed by eight), I feel great today. Not that I’d mind a little extra sleep, but I feel like a woman on a mission. And the cards reflect it:

The Star

Card 1 (The Star) : Physical  »

At the top of your form

The Emperor

Card 2 (The Emperor) : Mental  »

Decisive and laser focused!

6 of Swords

Card 3 (6 of Swords) : Emotional  »

Feeling quite stable

Every year (around Christmas time, which inevitably makes it around my birthday) La Mer has a special offer on this fabulous vanity bag with sample sizes of their best products. They call it a “starter kit”. And while I still want money more than anything else, I will not complain if I manage to get one of these from anyone.
